Coho (Silver) Salmon in Edmonds & Shilshole Bay, WA

We went Coho (Silver) Salmon fishing in Edmonds out of Shilshole Marina Sunday, September 23, 2012. Thanks to Chef Jose Chavez for the invite.
We hit the water just before sun up and headed straight to Edmonds. We fished the channel between the Edmonds ferry and the water plant on the shore, Maine area 10.
With three of us on board, we manged to hook 3 Coho salmon within the first 1 hour. The forth fish took a bit longer. After catching four between us in 3.5 hours we called it a day.
All were caught on topical spinners and flashers in depths of 80-150 feet of water. All fish between 8-12 pounds.

A very good day for fishing.

Madison River 2012 at Valley Garden – Ennis, Montana

Today was a banner day at Valley Garden on the Madison River near Jeffers and Ennis.
Even though we got a late start, the brown trout didn’t seem to mind. It was a 90° Montana scorcher in the midday. Fished 2 1/2 hours using Zugg bugs & lightning bugs.
Caught a nice 18-20″, one 12-14″ & three 8-10″. Of course all were released without harm.
Check out the picture of the nasty Madison beaver.

Russian River & Steelhead Park, Sonoma County / Forestville, California

My goal for 2012 is to fly fish at least one day each month. Of course, I will fish far more that 12 times, but the goal is to at least fish one day in each of the 12 months.

So, for February’s fly fishing day I fished the Russian River for Steelhead at Steelhead Regional Park in Forestville, California. This is a wonderful river to fish with a great deal of easy access that can easily be fly fished from shore or waders. This is a great location and a world class river right in the middle of Sonoma County wine country. There are several great places along the river in the area to fish, but with limited time I chose the highly reputed Steelhead Park.
The weather was typical early spring type in CA… 60 degrees and sunny. Fly fished for about 3 hours with various pink & orange streamers, articulated steelhead flies and an occasional double bunny. I saw only one float go down river, no waders and about 5-6 guys fishing with jigs and floats. I saw 3 fugly fish slowly swimming down river, even smacked one of them on the back without disturbing his oblivious travels. All three were certainly past their due dates. I could tell I had missed the run and read reports that fishing was better either several miles up river or closer to Bodega Bay. Being there for business I didn’t have a lot of flexibility, so this was as good as it was going to get. No fish caught today, but the good news is that it is quite easy to cheer up at any one of the 500+ wineries within a 10 mile radius or the Russian River Brewery in Santa Rosa & the Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma. Highly recommended to all.

FYI: Do you like chowder? Try Spud Point Crab Company in Bodega Bay. It is without a doubt the best I have ever had anywhere on either coast. Well worth the 30 minute drive after fishing.

I must say, the guy at Creekside Angling was right. The Scientific Anglers Sharkskin Steelhead tapered fly line sings and sings loud. Don’t get me wrong, I think the line is awesome and will choose it over my other lines. However, it does sing quite noticeably as it zings through the fishing rod eyelets & guides. I understand that that is because the line has microtextured surface like sharkskin. That aside, the line is very flexible and can easliy be shot accross a 40ft. wide river. It is easily placed with accuracy and speed. It can be pushed quite a distance with more accuracy that most other lines. It really has great shootability, less drag, virtualy zero water spray and floats very high. Of course, all this can lead to some sticky situations on the pickup & recast if you aren’t paying attention and are the slightest bit lazy on the back cast.

WARNING: It will shoot easliy where you thorw it. In other words, when you aim at that clump of washed out bushes on the opposite bank….don’t get upset when you hit the branches and then you have the opportunity to tie a new fly on your leader.

Overall, while at $100 these lines are expensive, they do perform better than my Rio Steehlead line & my Orvis Steelhead lines. I’m glad I have it.

Skykomish River – Sultan, Washington

Happy New Year – Time to start 2012 right by Steelhead fly fishing!!!
Fly fished the Skykomish River for Steelhead on the south side of the river & east of Mann Rd. Bridge. There is a nice trail that leads to a great sand bar area that can easily be fly fished from shore or waders. Location is pretty much directly across the river from downtown Sultan, Washington.
Today was so damn windy it wasn’t even worth it. Fly fished for about 1.5 hours with various pink & orange streamers & articulated steelhead flies. The wind was so strong that you couldn’t even cast more that 5 feet in front of you. And lag between 30-40 MPH gusts was so rare that you would only get 1 1/2 decent cast every 10-20 tries. Totally worthless, but still better that many alternatives. Caught nothing. I saw only 1 drift boat go down river, & one wader on the south side & one wader on the north side of the river. Only saw one fish & it was “a real beaut, Clark”.

Today was supposed to be a test of my new Sharkskin Steelhead Fly Line – well, we will have to wait until next time to get a real verdict. Not much use in 30-40 MPH winds.
You know what they say – “A bad day on the river is still better than a good day at work!”

Winter Fly Fishing on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington

Each year the week after Christmas, the family heads to the Olympic Pennisula for a little R&R and fly fishing. In general, this is Steelhead country & some of the finest fishing in the world.
Well, our annual trek on 12/26/11-12/29/11 couldn’t have been more soaked. Rain in the Ho Rain Forest is expected each time we visit. But, generally there is enough decent water in some river to find fish.
This year it was raining hard, really hard. All day. Every day.
Every day we went in search of a river that wasn’t at flood stage or filled with mud. Each day we looked for any sign that there might be fish that could see a fly that didn’t smack it in the eye. We went to the Ho River, we drove to the Clearwater River, we checked out the Bogachiel River, we drove to the Calawah, and we drove to the Sol Duc River.
After hundreds of miles of surveying we finally gave up. We left the rods in the truck and decided that we need to try somewhere new next year.

On the bright side, we did find some new spots that would be great to fly fish if the rivers were’nt flooded. See below.

How to Catch and Release Trout Safely

Catch and Release is important in fishing conservation. We all can do our part to maintain healthy fishing habitats and populations. Catch & Release is effective and easy fish conservation. Releasing a fish safely is a great way of helping to preserve the sport of fishing and fly fishing for others. Imagine releasing that 3lb Rainbow trout today, only to see your son or daughter catch it again later that day? How many times have you seen a trout float by upside down as your wading? Not cool. Catch-n-release sounds simple enough, but proper catching and proper releasing methods are important to the survival of the fish, particularily sensitive fish like trout. When you are on the river next time, please consider these steps to ensure a better chance of survival and future enjoyment by other anglers. Take a picture home instead of a dead fish. Put your picture up in the local bar & tell your friends how you caught AND released the fish. There is a certain matter of pride or confidence one feels when they release a fish unharmed knowing that they are just going to catch another one soon. Your friends will listen, appreciate, and respect you all the more for caring for the future of fishing.

How to handle fish and trout using catch and release:

What to do:

Do not allow the fish to struggle an unreasonable time in the current. Bring the fish in as soon as safely possible.
Use a net to bring in the fish. DO NOT yank it up on shore or drag it in the gravel or accross the top of the water. Attempt to allow it to swim to your net.
If possible, keep the fish & your net in or on the surface of the water. Unhook it without touching it with your hands. Use your net and pliers instead.
If you must handle the fish, wet your hands first
If possible, hold the fish upside down with wet hands and get it back into the water as quickly as possible. Holding the fish upside down essentially dumbs the fish with no harm or struggle, allowing you to remove the fly quickly without damage.
Use a hook release tool or pliers to release the fly or hook.

Hold the fish out with both hands supporting it’s underbelly…NOT the gills. Grabbing it by the gills will likely kill it minutes after released
After snapping your trophy photo, quickly return the fish to the water as noted below

If you’re fly fishing in a river, point the fish into the current while it breathes
Support it’s underbelly gently until it wiggles & swims out of your hands

That’s it…pretty easy & you likely just saved a fish for many anglers to enjoy in the future. And let’s be honest…if it ain’t a trophy…it ain’t worth keeping until it is. I can buy all the 1lb trout I can eat at the grocery store or local fish market.

Some important notes about what NOT to do:

Do not squeeze a fish
Do not put fingers in the gills
Do not hold the fish out of water longer than necessary. Get the hook out, get the photo, & return it to the water.
Do not throw a fish back into the water like a rock
DO not put your fingers into the gills to hold it
Do not let the fish flop around on the ground
Do not let your dog smack it around. At that piont, you might as well just let the dog eat it

We hope these tips help all of us to continue to enjoy the sport of catch and release fishing & catch-n-release fly fishing.

Madison River 2011 – Ennis, Montana

August 6th-13th, 2011
Again, the annual Montana Fly Fishing trip.
We set up a float trip on the Madison River with Joe Dilschneider of Montana Trout Stalkers & guides Jim Morrison & Chris Knott. They are the best guides & always make it a very productive day on the water even when other boats are having a rough go of it. Try to set up your Madison float with Joe and his folks early in your trip to pick up on any tips that can be useful on your own.

Day 1: Saturday – Drove non-stop to Ennis, Montana and checked in to our favorite place – the El Western, again.
Day 2: Sunday – After changing a flat tire on the truck, we fished The Madison River at Valley Garden. Great water this year with nice pools in the channels and inlets. Caught & released unharmed several small rainbow trout & a couple medium browns. Best bet was the Caddis. Also trailed an ant & lightning bugs behind stoneflys, girddle bugs & whooly buggers with some success.
Day 3: Monday – Floated a full day on the Madison with Montana Trout Stalkers & Joe. Dropped in 3 boats at Storey Ditch and pulled out near Burnt Tree. It wasn’t the greatest day for big fish, but still quite productive right up to the last cast. A couple guys in the group caught a few 22-24″ fatties. Spent most of the day trailing nymphs and lightning bugs behind stoneflys. We even tried double bunnies, zonkers & streamers without much luck.
Day 4: Tuesday – Day started a bit slow, so we just fished Ennis Lake & Bear Trap Canyon.
Day 5: Wednesday – Fished the Upper Ruby River. Read more about fly fishing the Ruby River here.
Day 6: Thursday – Midday we hiked & fished a small alpine lake off North Meadow Creek Road. Beautiful area, but don’t waste your time if your looking for fish. I think the whole place was nothing but a feeder and watering hole for cattle. After dinner at the Taqueria Las Palmitas we headed to the the trout farm, Bear Trap Canyon. Nice evening with plenty of action. Caught 2 rainbow & 1 brown on Elk Hair Caddis & a Prince Nymph trailing a brown Stonefly bug.
Day 7: Friday – Checked out of El Western & headed to Yellowstone Park. We stopped on the way to let the kids play in Quake Lake. The 83deg weather and breeze would have been great if it weren’t for the massive infestation of horse flies. We toughed it out for a hour or so before driving to West Yellowstone for some supplies to fish the Yellowstone River. First stop was my favorite place to buy fishing stuff in West Yellowstone, Madison River Outfitters. Second stop was the famous Bud Lilly’s Fly Shop. I buy flies at Bud Lilly’s because they are always helpful & the fly fishing report whiteboard always seems to be accurate and up to date. After getting the required Yellowstone National Park Fishing Permit ($15 for 3-day) and flies we headed to Old Faithful.

Firehole River – Yellowstone Park, Wyoming

We left Old Faithful at 8am with the intent to fish Slough Creek, Lamar River, & the Yellowstone River providing the water was clear. We didn’t watch closely enough & drove 30 miles past the turn for Slough Creek. By this time it was lunchtime, so we went to Yellowstone Lake for lunch on the beach. We had no idea Yellowstone Lake was so large, 136 square miles. If your going to fish Yellowstone Lake I highly recommend a guide & boat rental from the marina. The lake is so big that it could take you all day just to find a place to fish. Some local expertise is a must.

After Driving the entire Upper Loop and Lower Loop in 5 hours without fishing it was time to return to Old Faithful for some Bitch Creek refreshment & to regain composure. At 4pm we set out to fish the Firehole River on the way to dinner at the Beartooth BBQ in West Yellowstone. The Firehole River was in great shape, easy access, great water & easy to wade. Saw a few freshman jumping, but not much action to speak of…unless you count the wildlife. Nothing better than fly fishing in the middle of a river only to turn around and find you are surrounded on both sides by Elk. In 2 hours of fly fishing the Firehole I tried various rigs, including hoppers, double bunnies, bead head prince nymphs, girddle bugs, caddis & PMDs. I tried trailing most with lightning bugs and ants. Got a couple of small bites, but not much action to speak of. It was a great experience despite the lack of catching action.
After dinner, as planned, we fished the Madison River inside the park just before Madison Junction. MASS, MASS jumpers. I have never seen so many fish jumping during a hatch. It was insane just before sunset and billions of bugs on the water. But, the fish weren’t interested in my offerings. I tried every kind of dry fly I had in the box: caddis, dunns, drakes, anything & everything
It was awesome to see though.

Ruby River – Alder, Montana

Each year on our annual Montana fly fishing trip, we fish the lower Ruby River below the reservoir. This year I had a local in an Ennis fly shop tell me about his secret spot. “Just go to the red barn, ’bout 20 miles past the reservoir, park on other side of road and have at it.” Well, he was right. Great fishing and great water. The problem was the outfitters that had staked out the river at the bridge near the barn. Essentially, they told us they pay a rod fee there and that we were breaking the Montana Stream Access Law by accessing the water next to the bridge. I understand the need to protect the interest of their clients, but when we accessed the water from a public bridge on a public roadway I believe we were in the right and should’ve stayed the course.

Bridge Access
House Bill 190 , passed during the 2009 Legislative Session, confirmed that the public has access to surface waters by public bridge or county road right-of-way. The Department, in cooperation with the affected landowner and county, is responsible for providing public passage around or through a fence preventing such access. A typical access feature would be a stile, gate, roller, walkover, or wooden rail fence.

At any rate, being seven of us, it took a while to gather the dispersed troops. In the brief time hunting down the troops I managed to hook up 2 beautiful Rainbows in about 8 casts. Nice. The old man in the shop was right…this area kills. Anyways, to keep peace we all decided to go up river about 5 miles to Cottonwood Campground. This far up the river starts to get a little small and access is more difficult but entirely public. Fishing was less productive and all fish seen were in the 6″-12″ range. Not ideal

Skykomish River – Sultan, Washington

Fished the Skykomish River for Steelhead just East of Sultan, Washington. Fished float rigs for 2.5 hours spin cast with various pink & orange jigs sunk under an indicator. Caught nothing. There was about 6-7 sleds going up & down the river, & about 12-15 waders on the south side of the river. I only saw 1 fisherman hook a good size one from shore about 10:30am, nice fish.

Clear Lake & Rimrock Lake – Yakima, Washington

Fished Clear Lake on US-12, west of Yakima, Washington on 5/28/11.
Located one mile west of Rimrock Lake and 5.7 miles east of White Pass, this reservoir at 3,615 feet holds rainbows and has a public boat launch. The best fishing area is the west arm – take Rd 1200, Tieton Reservior Road, off Highway 12. Beautiful area with some outstanding camping and great Rainbow Trout fishing opportunities.
We intended to fish the Yakima River Canyon but water was very high and very cloudy. So, decided to take a look at Rimrock Lake and Clear Lake.

The best area has to be the Tieton River. It was closed this early in the year, but a must to try on the next outing. Campgrounds along White Pass Scenic Byway US Hwy 12 provide easy public access. The Tieton River begins in the Goat Rocks Wilderness area in two forks, the North Fork Tieton and the South Fork Tieton Rivers and eventually joins the Naches River. Fish for rainbows and whitefish, with whitefish angling best during the special whitefish-only winter season. The Bureau of Reclamation’s irrigation water management results in high flows and unfishable conditions from early September to late October.

We also found a small place along the Naches River on US-12 called Tim’s Pond. Seems to be the local pond for all kiddie trout fishing.

Plank Grilled Salmon & Steelhead Recipe

It’s easy to plank grill Salmon & Steelhead & the results are delicious. Be creative & pick some of your favorite ingredients:

Garlic, chives, parsley, butter
Garlic hickory rub
Tom Douglas Salmon Rub
Chili Spice mix, with Lemons
Dean & Deluca 5 Chili blend rub

Plank Prep

Soak Plank in water, min. 1 hour, max. 24 hours
Preheat plank on grill at medium heat 5 minutes
Brush plank with olive oil on cooking side
Place Salmon or Steelhead fish skin side down on center of plank

Direct Heat Grilling:
Use the grill on a low heat setting. Place plank in center over heat source. Close lid to infuse the fish with the smokey flavor of the plank. After smoking begins after 15-20 minutes, check regularly for flare ups. Use a small spray bottle if necessary. It’s OK to let the plank catch fire, just spray it out quickly.
Indirect Heat Grilling:
Use the grill on a medium heat setting. Place plank to the side of heat source. Close lid to infuse the fish with the smokey flavor of the plank. After smoking begins after 15-20 minutes, check regularly for flare ups. Use a small spray bottle if necessary.

When grilling multiple planks, be sure to leave a 1″ space between planks to allow the aroma to circulate. Also, experiment with the different flavorings that different woods impart. You can pick up grilling planks at Amazon (FIRE & FLAVOR Gourmet Grilling Planks, Cedar, 2-Count Packages (Pack of 3)), most grocery stores & kitchen stores in varieties that include Apple, Cedar, Mesquite, Hickory, Alder, and more.

Fly Fishing for Bass at Lake Cachuma – Santa Ynez, California

As planned we took the trip from Monterey to Santa Barbara, California April 2-8 & went fly fishing at Lake Cachuma in the Santa Ynez Valley, just up in the hills from Santa Barbara. I brought my Orvis TLS Power Matrix 906-4, a fine four piece rod that travels well in airports. I also brought the Orvis Battenkill Large Arbor with a sink-tip fly line and an assorted collection of streamers, zonkers, & wet & dry flies since I had no idea what to expect.

It’s early in the year and the weather is often unpredictable in the hills of Central California wine country. This time, it was overcast & about 60°+. We rented a motor boat and set out across the lake to Cachuma Bay. The water level is 180% of normal, so water is deep & had a ton of foliage, trees, rocks, etc. just under the surface.

Once I had the boy’s gear in the water & the boat calmly drifting through a small inlet, I quickly tied up a big Grey/White Double Bunny.
BAM. Two casts and I landed the first small mouth bass in the boat…fun. I had never caught bass on a fly, but this was looking easy. A couple more casts and another one. Another small mouth about 2lbs…nice fish. He was smart enough to jump off right at the boat.
Then… disaster hits. Long story short…I put down my fly rod & help my son’s line from getting caught in the prop. Just as I manage to save his line mine gets tangled in the prop. I kill the motor, too late. My $70 line is toast and so is my Double Bunny.
Note to self: Take your own gear out of the water first.
We concentrated on his fishing for a hour more and called it a day. Expensive & short, but still a good day on the water.

Get the rods out… We are taking a week long trip from Monterrey, CA down to Santa Barbara, California April 2-8.
Do you know a good place to fly fish? It looks like many of the rivers and streams don’t open until April 30th, according to California Fishing Regulations
What are your suggestions for fishing in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties in early April?

I am hoping to trout fish but just don’t know where to go.
I’ll take my son to Lake Cachuma to fish where I used to fish with Grandpa and my Uncle.
Has anyone got much experience fly fishing Cachuma from the shore? What areas of the resevoir are the best? Sadly, we’ll be leaving the day before the Annual Trout Derby. We will plan better next time.

Tokul Creek, Snoqualmie River – Fall City, Washington

Fished a float rig at Tokul Creek near Snoqualmie, Washington for a while with a spinner corkie and yarn. After 1 hour, dropped the float and proceeded to fish with orange winged corkie, slinky weight, and white & pink yarn. Two and half hours of fishing in sub freezing temperatures…caught nothing. Did manage to drop my AT&T Samsung Captivate in Tokul Creek though. I fished it out immediately and surprisingly it is still functioning after cleaning and blowing out moisture. No water got into the case…shocking.
Anyways, great place, about 20 others there coming and going. Only saw 1 that was caught pre-arrival on South side of Snoqualmie River right past the Tokul outlet.
Time: 8:30am-12pm
Weather: COLD!!!! 23 degrees
Maybe next year…

Bogachiel River – Forks, Washington

This is a great place to fish near Forks, Washington. Fished Bogachiel River at the Bogachiel Campground just North of bridge and on southside under the bridge near Forks.
Fishing for Steelhead. On the South side drift boat pull out there is great access, nice rocky bar to pull out on….you can almost fish from the truck. The boat drop in appears to be up Bogachiel Rd about 4-5 miles….very nice up there. Saw a herd of Elk up there.
CAUGHT ONE…with my bare hands. Check out the ugly a$$ Coho that had survived months past his due date. He swam right up to me, so i grabbed him by the head and tossed him up on the sand. A mercy killing for sure.

Fished the Skykomish River near Gold Bar, Washington for Steelhead and Trout at the rail road trestle at Big Eddy. Tried float rig fishing for 2 hours, then switched to spin cast w/ various lures. Caught nothing. Weather was awful, rain, rain, more rain. Water was high and pretty dirty from recent rain and minor flooding.

Access: Great, wade, launch, shore

I presume due to the snow. Anyways, good access from the park on the North side. Freezing Cold, so went into Fall City’s Last Frontier Saloon to watch rest of the Seahawks game.

Madison River 2010 – Ennis, Montana

Brought the families with us this time to the Madison River Valley in Ennis, Montana. It worked out very well. We still had enough of the usual antics and everyone enjoyed themselves. The general area has a wide variety of activities to keep everyone entertained while out on the river. Be sure to check out Virginia City, West Yellowstone, and Bozeman.

When fishing in Montana, we always plan ahead & set up a float trip on the Madison River. Our guides of choice are Montana Trout Stalkers. They are simply the best guides I have ever dealt with. Joe Dilschneider has always been very accommodating and has always made it a very productive day on the water. We haven’t fished with all of the Trout Stalker guides, but if the rest are as good as Joe and Chris Knott, well then your in for a great day. There have been many times over the years when it was “like shooting fish in a barrel”. They are very professional, very enthusiastic, always prepared for anything, fun, and….good at what they do. Highly recommended.
We always try to set up the Madison float with Joe and his folks earlier in the week in an effort to learn and pick up on any tips that will be useful on our own during the rest of the trip….always a good idea to learn early from the pros.

Weather was great, and kids caught their first fish….both rainbows on the Lower Madison River in Bear trap canyon.

Day 1: Friday – Drove to Spokane, stayed at the Red Lion.
Day 2: Saturday – Drove to REI in Missoula to pick up a bike for the wife, then on to the El Western, again.
Day 3: Sunday – Fish, release, Fish, release, BBQ, Fish, release – Sunday was a day for all the rookies to acclimate themselves to the area, so most of the fishing was done around the Ennis Bridge and Valley Garden.
Day 4-6: Fish, Fish, more fish, Float the Madison with Montana Trout Stalkers, adventure, pan for gold, fish, fish, fish
Day 7: Friday – Drove to Spokane, stayed at the other Red Lion….much better.

Water was probably 3 feet higher than same time in 2009. So, this year we went looking elsewhere. We ended up fishing Davis Lake and Hidden Lake.

Davis Lake – Winthrop, Washington

Fished Davis Lake near Winthrop, Washington – 5-6 miles southeast of Winthrop up in the hills. GREAT Lake Location. Used single barbless hooks, spinners, spoons……no luck. Fly fished with a green dragon. Saw a few small jumpers.
We also took a drive up into the mountains east of town to a really beautiful area called Cougar Lake. Cougar Lake is a small, high alpine lake that would be great to float on. We were running out of time and the kids were spent, so we didn’t fish, but will the next time we are near Winthrop.

Access: Great, would be better with a float

Simms Pursuit Sandals

In anticipation of Bonefishing in Kauai this year, I am looking to buy a pair of Simms Streamtread Sandal – Simms Pursuit Sandals.
Anyone have any experience with these? They seem like they would be great for moving around on the reefs near Princeville and Anini Beach.

Ok, so I broke down and bought a pair of the SIMMS pursuit sandals. Highly recommended. These are great for warmer weather water & are very stable. The tread is very good & not slippery like other water shoes. The soles are thick enough to not feel any sharp edges or points in the streambed or coral. They look good & work great. Not much else to say, other than I am glad I bought them.

Clearwater River – Clearwater, Washington

Fished Clearwater River in Clearwater, Washington briefly on way back from the Queets River just off Clearwater Road just past the first bridge and the “Entering Clearwater” sign on the right. Fishing for Steelhead. Pulled out on the edge of the beach, left waders in truck, and grabbed the spinner. A few feet from the truck I snagged 2nd cast in 2 feet depth. Laid down the rod, went back to truck, put on waders, went back and waded out to the rig and unhooked the snag. Proceeded to float w/ the “pink” rig just fine. Fished about 10 casts before I saw a big one swim right in front of my feet. About a 15lb Salmon, probably an outdated Coho, it was ugly and in bad shape and wasn’t hungry at all. I nearly slapped him in the head with the rig after 3 direct passes didn’t cause a stir. He finally drifted out deeper and downstream. He was an ugly fellow with lots of rough white blotches on nearly his entire back. Time to leave. No fish.

Fished Queets River near the 2nd boat drop just past Matheny Creek off Lower Queets Valley Road in Queets, Washington. Fishing for Steelhead. Six trailers on the sand bar, 6-8 vehicles at the pickup on the downriver bend crossing the Salmon River. When leaving after a frigid afternoon of wading and the rain began falling I saw 2 drift boaters pickup a trailer, but no fish.

Snohomish River – Monroe, Washington

Fished the Snohomish River in Monroe, Washington under the overpass near the Monroe State Prison. Fishing for anything, but particularly for Trout and Pink Salmon. Tons of folks, 8-10 on north side of river (4 were fly fishing), about 20 on south side. I saw 1 wader hook a 12-14″ trout on the fly. Too early in the Pinks run I guess….. they hadn’t reached this far yet.

My neighbor caught and released a 26″ native just up river from the Money Creek Campground. Fished the Skykomish for Steelhead and Trout at the bridge at Money Creek. Looking for any remaining Steelhead and Pinks. Tried float fishing for 2 hours, then switched to spin cast w/ various lures. Caught nothing.

Tried fly fishing for 2 hours, then switched to spin cast w/ various flies being sunk under an indicator. Caught nothing. Saw 1 fisherman hook a good size one about 11am, but he lost it when it took him into the rocks. Another “baitcaster” had caught 2 around 6-7am.

Not much of a place to fish, more of a watercraft lake.

Upper Cle Elum River – Salmon la Sac, Washington

Fished Upper Cle Elum River at first main bridge south of Salmon la Sac Campground upnear Salmon la Sac, Washington. Nice spot, water was clear , access was good, but fishing was not very productive. Attempted Lightning bugs, Elkhair Caddis, San Juan worm, and Prince Nymph. Had a couple bites on Prince, none hooked. Kids also fished with the Spiderman and Barbie rigs…with very little success, unless you count catching rocks.
Fished the “washout” area just south of Salmon la Sac on Upper Cle Elem. The “washout” is an area where the river has washed out Hwy 903/Salmon la Sac Road, some gravel repair has restored it to where passage is capable. Some very excellent riffles and holes here along the road. Attempted to Czech Nymph through some of rocky area…wow, not bad for first try. Caught and released unharmed two 10-12in Rainbow trout. Used a lighting bug behind an Elkhair Caddis. Wind was picking up pretty good, so only fished 1.5 hours.
Time: Saturday, June 20th, 2009, Saturday, 10am-12pm, 5-6:30pm
Weather: 70-75 F, WINDY
Water: Clear, cold, fast
Access: Great
Rig: Green Lightning bug trailing Elkhair Caddis, 7.5ft 4x Rio Leader, not optimal but worked some
Notes: Drove to Tucquala Lake (10mi up in alpine lake area), not very accessible for shore fishing this early, snow still on ground. Ranger suggested that there could be a couple in the beaver ponds, but probably would wait until Aug/Sept.

Rattlesnake Lake – North Bend, Washington

Fished Rattlesnake Lake near North Bend, Washington today. We saw a few little ones jumping out deep, but nothing from shore with in casting distance. Lake was very low. A few floaters, but no action.

Time: 8am
Weather: 50-55 F
Water: Clear, very cold, no wind
Access: Good, shallow
Rig: Fly: Prince nymph, Caddis, Red San Juan worm. Spinner: Berkley Egg Clusters
Notes: Probably best when floated or rowed. 3rd try….nothing….much better rivers nearby to try.

Corbetena and The Marietas Islands – Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Corbetena and The Marietas Islands are notoriously active for Marlin, Sailfish and Tuna, this place did not disappoint. Twenty to 36 miles West off the coast of Marina Vallarta, Mexico is where the fish are. We set out about 6am and arrived near the Islands by 8am . Before lunch we had caught 2 9ft Sailfish and a 15-20lb Tuna. The boat was a little dated, but the Captain and deckhand were very knowledgeable and very nice. And, did I mention? We caught 2 Sailfish in about 2 hours. We did not encounter any Marlin as they tend to be more near El Banco (The Banks), which is another 15 miles out and another couple more Ben Franklins.

Rig/Gear: Shimano/Penn/Tiagra Reels, Calstar Rods
Boat: 32′ Tournament something
Note(s):Master Baiter’s Sportfishing is relatively expensive, but they have a reputation for “catching”, not just “fishing”. I found it well worth it. “You usually get what you pay for!”

Roche Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington

Fished for salmon and bottom fish along some of the shorelines near Roche Harbor & San Juan Island, Washington. Rented a ’14 aluminum boat in Friday Harbor. The two guys on board caught nothing, but the one woman on board managed to catch a small ling cod which we release being it was not in season. Found a crazy sea snake swimming between boats in the Roche Harbor Marina.

Madison River 2004 – Ennis, Montana

June, 2004
Last year we learned a lot about. This year we got it all figured out…..flawless.
We rented TWO 28′ motorhomes for the six of us. That’s right, we expanded…we initiated a couple newbies to the club.

Apparently, there were a few more lessons to be learned….like, how to hard wire the lights and windshield wipers on your motorhome during a torrential downpour, & how to bottom out a motorhome at the local drift boat launch.

If memory serves correctly, this year we golfed Old Works again….there was a bet to be paid.

What can i say…it was another rousing success.

Madison River 2003 – Ennis, Montana

The Madison River – Ennis, Montana
The first of many annual fly fishing trips. A buddy recommended we go to Montana to fly fish. When younger, he used to fish the Madison at Valley Garden and Varney Bridge with his father and grandpa. The rest of us thought that sounded great….so, it began.

We rented a 34′ motor home for the four of us.
There were a lot of lessons to be learned….like, how to empty the waste water. How to park just right along the river so that the wind rips the awning off. How to bottom out a motor home. How to camp in the local drift boat drop in site…not recommended.

We made it a golf and fishing trip.
Day 1: Drive, camp in the Walmart parking lot in Spokane
Day 2: Drive, play a round of golf at Old Works. Finish drive to Ennis, MT.
Day 3: Woke up and realized we had camped in the boat launch/drop in near Varney Bridge. A few unhappy locals were eyeballing us. We fished up and down all day…we caught quite a few Brown trout and some whiteys. Wind was fierce….while we all eagerly hunted fish, we forgot to wind in the awning….oops, it got ripped right off the house. Thank god we bought the insurance. We taped it up and rolled on.
Day 4: Moved the house to Valley Garden. Seemed safer than getting shot at by the angry boaters and guides.
Day 5-6. Fished, fished, fished. more fish. We caught a lot of Rainbow, Brown, and a few Whitefish. whitefish a re less plentiful down near Valley Garden. One of the crew had a date with Bullwinlke….yep, got chased out of a channel by a full blown bull moose. He was pissed. Great fun.
Day 7: Head to Coeur d’Alene …nothing good ever happens here. But, it always is a out of control good time with many stories to not tell. You had to be there.
Day 8: Home, way too soon.

Hamilton Island – Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Sailed for a week in the Whitsunday Islands, primarily around Hamilton Island. Visited Sydney & Hunter Valley wine country for 1 week.
AWESOME. MUST fish in Australia again.
We fished everyday off the back of the catamaran with a simple spool line and hook. We didn’t catch anything, but relaxing anyways.
We did fish a charter out of Hamilton Island, Renegade Fishing. I caught 2 rock fish. There was about 8 on board, but no one else caught a thing. They made for a GREAT dinner on board the Aurora that evening while sailing towards the sunset.
